Have Tracy Do It For You

Creating a nonprofit can be difficult and confusing. I know because it took me 5 years to understand the IRS application process. I went to nonprofit events, spoke to lawyers and met with nonprofit owners. Even after that, I was still confused!

One day while sitting at home I decided to go through the IRS application, piece by piece. There are eleven parts to the application, so I researched each section for better understanding. Here is what I found.

The Narrative Description must be written down in detail, describing every part of your nonprofit. It is the business description. You will need the marketing forecast, the need statistics, the operational plan, the budgets, and the specifics of nonprofit status. This is the biggest part of the application and will take the longest to complete.

The Bylaws is a legal document that will guide your organization. This document has to be created by people you elect to be on your board. Also, this document list roles and responsibilities of your nonprofit staff. This will have to be created to complete the IRS application.

The Mission Statement is a one paragraph of why you are starting a nonprofit. You will need to create a statement of your vision and goals for your nonprofit.

The Conflict of Interest is also a legal document that states, in detail, how conflicts will be resolved.

Financing/Budgeting You will need to explain all the different ways you plan to fund your nonprofit.

This Article of Incorporation This document has to be completed and submitted to the Secretary of State.

Brochure/Website We will have to create either a brochure or website for your nonprofit.

As a consultant, my job is to walk you through each step of the IRS application, or I will do it for you. I will pull information from you to complete each part. This is a process that will take several meetings. When I get all the information from you I will begin writing the application and completing each section, confirming each part as I go. When we get to the Bylaw section, I will explain your role and responsibility as described, so that you will be confident as a nonprofit owner. This process usually takes six weeks to complete.
